The coming-of-age ceremony for Japan’s male imperial family members was held for the first time in 40 years.

The Coronation Ceremony of His Imperial Highness Prince Hisahito

The Coronation Ceremony holds the significance of a coming-of-age ceremony for male members of the Imperial Family upon reaching adulthood.

The current age of adulthood in Japan is 18 years old.

Prince Hisahito turned 18 last year, but because he was preparing for university entrance exams last year, they were held this year.

The Emperor presents the crown worn by adults.

The Coronation Ceremony Attire

At the “Crowning Ceremony,” the Chamberlain

bestows the crown worn by adult members of the Imperial Family from the Emperor

and places it upon Prince Hisahito.

From the middle of the ceremony onward, he attended wearing the black attire of

adulthood, having changed from the light yellow garments of youth.

The longer the hem of the ceremonial robe, the higher the rank. In the case of Prince Hisahito,

the length from the shoulder is 6 meters.

The above is referenced from the September 25th edition of the Kyoto Shimbun.
